Our Interest Is the Compass

By Chris Matakas · May 2, 2023 · 1 min read

I wanted to drop a very quick note to you, in hope that this finds you well.

I’ve been obsessed with how Psychology and Mythology blend with personal development for as long as I can remember. Untold hours of study – between Jung, Peterson, Campbell, Huxley, and the rest – has provided a surplus of information which can be nested into just a handful of useful categories. These are the frameworks I use with my clients to help them create the life change they envision – whether business or personal success.

Something that stands out for me is the simplicity and truth of pursuing “interest.”

You cannot control what you are interested in. You have no say in whether you like this or that. For reasons beyond the scope of this conversation, there are some things you find deeply meaningful. That which you are called to.

And then there is everything else.

You could almost say: there is passionate play…and there is everything else.

I have found the following statement to be true, with 100% success rate with the people I serve:

If you genuinely pursue your interest, and strive to go deeper into that discipline (whatever it is), your life gets better.

Our interest is a cue that there is something there for us, something we need for our continued maturation into whatever it is we are becoming.

And I think when you pursue your interest, to use the worlds from The Alchemist, “The universe conspires in your favor.”

There are unseen helping hands, both internal and external, that lie dormant. They are awakened when we pursue our interests.

Old people stay young because they have interests.

Middle aged people avoid mid-life crises because they have interests.

Kids stay out of trouble because they have interests.

Pursue what you find meaningful. That’s where you will find yourself. Our interest is the compass by which we navigate this life.

Listen and be guided, my friend.

Wishing you well,
Chris
