About
Chris Matakas
Performance coach, author and second-degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. Chris believes the more we grow, the more we have to give, and that fulfilling our potential is how we serve the people who count on us.

On the mat
A life shaped by Jiu Jitsu
Chris earned his black belt in 2015 under UFC veteran and Jiu Jitsu legend Ricardo Almeida, and today holds the rank of second-degree black belt. He trained for years beside fighters like Frankie Edgar and Eddie Alvarez, often as a training partner in the lead-up to their fights.
In 2017 he founded the Matakas Jiu Jitsu Academy to serve his community. It has grown into a center for personal growth in central New Jersey, with schools in Florence and Hamilton.

Fifteen books and hundreds of essays
Chris writes about using Jiu Jitsu as a vehicle for personal development. His books, from My Mastery to Jiu Jitsu and the Ego, have reached tens of thousands of readers, and his essays work through the Stoics, Aristotle, Thoreau, Schopenhauer and the lessons of the mat.
His thinking draws on Carl Jung, Jordan Peterson and Aldous Huxley: the most fulfilling life is spent in pursuit of self-mastery, so that we have more to give our friends, family and community.
Off the mat
Matakas Coaching
During the pandemic in 2020, more and more readers reached out for guidance. Chris founded Matakas Coaching to help high achievers fulfill their potential off the mat as well, and today coaches small business owners and community leaders.

At home
A quiet life in the forest
Chris lives with his family in the forest, writing and coaching from his home office, with plenty of time for hiking with his family and dogs.
